Fuchiko – Japan

I started out buying ‘just a couple’ of these on a trip to Japan a few years ago… On a recent visit I collected a handful more. Then I got home and wondered what to do with them all… Recently I put them together in this wooden box – that had originally packaged expensive chocolates – along with a bunch of other stuff I have collected over the years… Each square in the grid measures 4cm to give you a sense of scale.

‘Fuchi’ means edge in Japanese, and Fuchiko is the playful name for this diminutive fir; who can be hung on the edge of any cup or glass. Fuchiko was created by a well known manga artist, Katsuki Tanaka, in collaboration with toy manufacturer Kitan Club.

They are exquisitely made. Not painted plastic, I guess it is some kind of 3D printing process…

Mostly she is dressed in a uniform of what they call O.L’s – Office Lady which is kind of the female equivalent of the ubiquitous Japanese Salary Man.

Some versions have her in different modes, such as below, where she is going travelling. Note the attention to details…

Below Fuchico co-opted into marketing for famous Tokyu Hands store, as a shop assistant.
