Tadao Ando – Garden of Fine Arts, Kyoto

I was headed to the Kyoto Botanical Gardens and read about this outdoor ‘museum’ designed by the brilliant architect Tadao Ando. You are led through the space with walkways and running water that takes you to viewing spots of the 8 or so ‘works of art’ on view. This Gallery was commisioned by a Japanese ceramic tile manufacturer as a way to display their skills (I guess) and the works of art are reproductions of, for example, Michelangelo’s Last Judgement and Monet’s Waterlilies. I thought this sounded kind of naff but wanted to see this Ando-san design. The artworks were actually great but the space itself was the true work of art…. A total delight to wander through.
